CARAT’s Bias Line Characteristic Survey
Analysis Result

Oftentimes I saw Carats on my twitter’s timeline talking about how each SEVENTEEN’s sub fandom characteristics act like. Most of them put their personal analysis and I must admit that all of them are so fun to read. Some of the examples such as Couprang (S.Coups’ sub fandom) are often tough-type and mature, 8Star (Minghao’s sub fandom) are mostly wise and calm, Jjeongjjongie Fan (Jeonghan’s sub fandom) are mostly a loyal friend, and so on. I also found it interesting to see because they pulled their analysis based on how a member actually acts as far as we watch their contents. Even though it’s never been valid, many of them agree on the sentences. Is it because of the Similarity-Attraction Theory? People are likely to be attracted to someone similar to them rather than dissimilar (Robinson, 2019). Robinson (2019) also cites that possible reasons for Similarity-Attraction to happen is likely because similarities strengthen the thought that a person is not alone. Another hypothesis is knowledge of similarities towards someone or something works to predict future behavior of the object. The theory isn’t limited to physical features only but also to personality traits. Due to that, I believe it’s better to make it more scientific and data-based to validate Carat’s opinion and personal analysis. Thus, the purpose of this study is to see the characteristics of each SEVENTEEN’s member’s fans. The survey is divided into two parts, the first part includes 20 questions on a Likert scale-based, the second part includes 10 questions on a case study-based. Both parts are inspired by a member's characteristics from Going Seventeen: Know Thyself episode and general questions from a member’s personality trait.
The survey was done for almost a month from ideas, discussion, data retrieval, data processing, until result distributing. This survey was filled by 775 Carats through social media such as Twitter and Instagram. 13 sub fandoms from the greater Carat took participation which are: Couprang for S.Coups (10,7%), Jjeongjjeongie Fan for Jeonghan (10,1%), Joshushushu for Joshua (9%), Huihui for Jun (4%), Horangdan for Hoshi (9,5%), Wonwoorideul for Wonwoo (17,8%), Woozidan for Woozi (5,2%), 8Star for Minghao (5,5%), Gyuldaengie for Mingyu (10,2%), Cuties Gathering for Dokyeom (7,9%), Boosadan for Seungkwan (3,7%), Dolly for Vernon (3,1%), and Dinonara for Dino (3,2%). I was processing all the data by separating it into its own sub fandom. For Part One, data processing was done by splitting the answers into half: Strongly Disagree (SD) summed up with Disagree (D) and Agree (A) summed up with Strongly Agree (SA). For Part Two, data processing was done without splitting the answers into half since it already has two options.

Part One: Individual Analysis

Couprang - S.Coups’ Sub Fandom
S.Coups was known for his high motivation to achieve success. For Couprang, I chose the same trait which is written in “I am very motivated to achieve success in life” statement. Result shows that Couprang scores a high number towards A/SA at 88%. Compared to other sub fandom, they chose A/SA as the majority as well with Gyuldaengie scores the highest at 96% and Jjeongjjeongie Fan scores the lowest at 68%.Jjeongjjeongie Fan - Jeonghan’s Sub Fandom
Jeonghan was known for his interest in stimulating and adventurous things. I chose this trait for Jjeongjjeongie Fan in the “I am interested in wild and adventurous things” statement. Something unique is Jeonghan’s fans don't seem to feel the same as him since they score 55% towards SD/D. Same result goes with Wonwoorideul, Boosadan, and Dinonara. Then, who’s the most interested in wild and adventurous things? It’s Dolly who scores 71% in A/SA.Joshushushu - Joshua’s Sub Fandom
Joshua’s result shows that he’s pretty much an attention-seeker, along with Minghao and Mingyu. Within this survey, the statement “I like drawing people’s attention to me” was inspired by the trait. All sub fandoms scored majority towards SD/D including Joshushushu (67%), 8Star (70%), and Gyuldaengie (61%). Woozidan scores the highest at 80% and Horangdan scores the lowest at 58%.Huihui - Jun’s Sub Fandom
During the TCI test, it shows that Jun has difficulty sympathizing with someone’s different opinion than him. Thus, the statement “I find it hard to sympathize with someone’s different opinion than me” was chosen for Huihui. All sub fandoms scored majority towards SD/D including Huihui at 67%. Result shows that Boosadan scores the highest towards SD/D at 76% followed by Wonwoorideul at 75%.
Another statement which I addressed to Huihui is “I often have tons of crazy ideas inside my head”. It was inspired by a popular opinion about Jun among Carats. As a result, all sub fandoms also score high in A/SA including Huihui at 77%. In the midst of it, Joshushushu scores the highest with 86% A/SA.Horangdan - Hoshi’s Sub Fandom
In responsibility, Hoshi was known to have the highest score among other members. Therefore, the statement addressed to that trait is “I have a huge sense of responsibility”. Result shows that every sub fandom scored a high number of majority towards A/SA including Horangdan at 77%, along with Jjeongjjeongie Fan who scored 77% too. Top three highest are: Dolly (96%), Boosadan (93%), and Cuties Gathering (91%).Wonwoorideul - Wonwoo’s Sub Fandom
Wonwoo’s result shows that he’s a cautious person, along with Dino. They only act after making careful decisions. The statement “I take things into consideration carefully before making decisions” was inspired by the trait. All sub fandom scored a very high number towards A/SA, Wonwoorideul is the 5th highest at 88% along with Woozidan and Cuties Gathering. The sub fandom who scored the highest is Dolly with 100% A/SA.Woozidan - Woozi’s Sub Fandom
Woozi was known as a strict person in following rules and standards. A statement inspired by that was “I am strict in following rules and standards”. In this survey, Woozidan is the 2nd highest to score high towards A/SA with 80%, the highest is Cuties Gathering at 82%. There’s a sub fandom being the only one who scored majority towards SD/D: Dinonara at 52%.8Star - Minghao’s Sub Fandom
Minghao’s result shows that he’s a go-with-the-big-picture person, along with Joshua and Mingyu. Thus, the statement “I often see the bigger picture rather than details” was addressed to the trait. Unlike Minghao, it seems like 8Star prefers to see details rather than whole due to their score at 56% as the majority towards SD/D. Same result goes with Dinonara (56%), Huihui (55%), and Boosadan (62%) who prefer details as well.Gyuldaengie - Mingyu’s Sub Fandom
Mingyu was known to be the most altruistic person within the group. The statement “I like to help other people whenever I can” was inspired by that. Result shows that every sub fandom scored a very high number towards A/SA with only 81% as the lowest. In this survey, Gyuldaengie and Dolly are two with the highest score at 96% A/SA.
Another statement addressed to Gyuldaengie was “I don’t hold grudges on other people” which is just like how Mingyu senses. The result is pretty unique because all sub fandom except for one scored majority towards SD/D. Gyuldaengie placed as the 5th highest in SD/D at 59%, along with Boosadan and Dolly. The highest in SD/D is Dinonara at 72% and the only sub fandom who scored majority in A/SA is 8Star at 60%.Cuties Gathering - Dokyeom Sub Fandom
Dokyeom’s result shows that he has a great imagination and is illogical. For Cuties Gathering, the statement used was “I often lose myself in daydreams”. What’s interesting is that all sub fandom chose A/SA as the majority. Cuties Gathering placed as the 4th highest in A/SA at 77% along with Jjeongjjeongie Fan and Horangdan. Huihui is the highest at 90% and Boosadan is the lowest at 53% in A/SA.Boosadan - Seungkwan’s Sub Fandom
Seungkwan is a person who’s able to read the room for social cues according to his result, similar to Dino’s and Vernon’s. In this survey, the statement used was “I am good at reading the room” for Boosadan. Every sub fandom chose A/SA as the majority including Dinonara at 60% and Boosadan at 62% as two of the lowest. The highest to score is Joshushushu (84%), followed by Jjeongjjeongie Fan (83%) and Cuties Gathering (82%).Dolly - Vernon’s Sub Fandom
Vernon was known for his ability to prioritize himself rather than how people will judge him. The statement “I don’t care of what others might say about me” was inspired by the trait. In this survey, I see that Carat’s viewpoints are so varied that it almost split in half. There are seven sub fandoms who scored majority towards SD/D including Dolly at 63% and Boosadan as the highest at 65%. Then, there are five sub fandoms who scored majority towards A/SA with Dinonara as the highest at 76%. Meanwhile Jjeongjjeongie Fan scored exactly 50:50 (SD/D:A/SA) and even the pie chart forms a perfect upside down peace logo.Dinonara - Dino’s Sub Fandom
Dino was known as a considerate, warm, and sympathetic person. But he can feel empty and hurt inside too when he gets rejected. Thus, the statement I chose for Dinonara was “I feel empty and hurt inside when someone rejects me”. All sub fandom scored a high number towards A/SA with Dolly as the lowest at 63%. Dinonara became the highest to Agree and Strongly Agree at 84%.

Part Two: MBTI Trait Analysis

ENFJs (Joshua, Mingyu, and Dino)
One of ENFJs strengths is being passionate: they took great pleasure in doing their hobbies. Within this survey, the statement “I take great pleasure in pursuing hobbies” was inspired by that. All sub fandom scored a very high number towards A/SA with only 73% as the lowest. This included Joshushushu at 90% and became the 3rd highest before Dolly (92%) and Woozidan (95%). Gyuldaengie along with Huihui placed as 5th highest at 84% and Dinonara as the 7th highest at 80%.INFPs (S.Coups, Jun, Hoshi, Dokyeom)
INFP was known for being idealistic: they like to strive for what they think is right, this includes their desire to live a meaningful life not limited to them but also to others. Within this survey, the statement used was “I want to make the world a better place for people I cherish the most”. Every sub fandom chose A/SA as the majority with only 88% as the lowest score. Couprang scores 96%, Huihui scores 90%, Horangdan scores 88%, and Cuties Gathering scores 98%. The highest sub fandoms to score are 8Star and Dolly at 100% A/SA.INFJs (Wonwoo, Woozi, and Minghao)
One of INFJs weakness is being reluctant to open up: they may find it difficult to open up about their struggles. The last statement in Part One of the questionnaire was inspired by the trait, “I find it difficult to open up about my feelings to other people”. Result shows that Carat as a whole chose A/SA as the majority with 66% as the lowest, achieved by Boosadan. Woozidan scored the highest at 90% and Wonwoorideul placed as the 3rd highest at 85%. Meanwhile 8Star placed as the 3rd lowest at 77% along with Couprang.ENFP (Seungkwan) and ISTP (Vernon)
The statement used was “I can’t maintain long-term goals” to describe both parts in this survey. ENFP and ISTP have this same weakness namely unfocused and easily bored. For ENFP, they have the urge to take on new challenges, making it hard to focus on the long-term. For ISTP, they enjoy novelty and likely moving on to a new challenge once one is understood, making it hard to focus on the long-term. Result shows that there are four sub fandoms who chose SD/D as the majority including Dolly at 71% and became the highest, followed by Dinonara (56%), Gyuldaengie (55%), and 8Star (51%). Then, there are eight sub fandoms who chose A/SA as the majority including Boosadan at 55%. The highest to score in A/SA is Jjeongjjeongie Fan at 68%. Meanwhile Woozidan managed to score perfectly 50:50 between SD/D and A/SA.ISFJ (Jeonghan)
One of ISFJs strength is for being observant: they pay attention to even the smallest thing, particularly about other people. In this survey, the statement used was “I remember every important date about my loved ones”. Every sub fandom scored high in majority towards A/SA including Jjeongjjeongie Fan at 74%. Top three highest to score are Gyuldaengie (84%), Joshushushu (81%), and 8Star (81%). The lowest score is achieved by Dinonara at 60%.

Part Three: TCI Trait Analysis

Temperament: Optimistic
Inspired by one of the TCI Test’s dimensions in temperament: optimistic. To think that what’s good is good. According to the Know Thyself episode, Joshua, Mingyu, and Minghao scored high on this dimension. The case used in this survey was “Someone gave you a present when it’s not your birthday yet. Your reaction?” Result shows that there are five sub fandoms who scored majority in option (1) “They are so nice, I love it!” which suits the dimension better. They are Joshushushu along with Gyuldaengie at 54%, Horangdan at 53%, Dinonara at 52%, and Boosadan at 69% as the highest. On the other side, there are eight sub fandoms who scored majority in option (2) “I love it but why did they give it to me?” with Dolly (63%) and Wonwoorideul (59%) as the top two highest.Temperament: Novelty-Seeking
Novelty-seeking is a tendency to seek new stimulation. SVT’s result shows that the majority of them scored high except for Woozi as the only one who scored low, making him better at controlling himself. The case “You work on the same activity five days a week for over six months. Your reaction?” was inspired by it. Option (1) stands for “Seek unrelated things or other work for balance” suits the dimension better. There are ten sub fandoms who chose option (1) including Woozidan at 60% along with Couprang and became the 2nd highest before Dolly at 67%. As a contrary, there are three sub fandoms who scored majority towards option (2) “It’s okay, I can be a master in this field soon!”, namely Dinonara at 56%, Gyuldaengie at 52%, and 8Star at 51%.Temperament: Anxiety
This dimension shows how someone suppresses their emotion before dangerous stimulation. Joshua, Jun, Minghao, Mingyu, and Vernon were known for having a very low level result, which means they are very stable. Within this survey, the case used was “Finally, after three days of practice, an important presentation will be held tomorrow. How do you feel?” with option (1) “Anxious! Will three days of practice be enough?” as the majority answer chosen by all sub fandoms. The highest to score are: Cuties Gathering (75%), Couprang along with Woozidan (72%), and Wonwoorideul (70%). The lowest are: Jjeongjjeongie Fan (55%), Joshushushu (56%), and 8Star (58%).Temperament: Sentimental
This dimension is related to how someone is sensitive to social signals such as face expressions and emotions. S.Coups, Joshua, Mingyu, Minghao, Dokyeom, and Seungkwan were known for having a high level result. The case “Today is SEVENTEEN’s concert day. You’re going crazy when the Hip Hop Team takes over the stage…” was inspired by it. Option (1) “Immediately ask if they’re okay or need something” is the majority answer chosen by all sub fandoms. In this survey, the highest to score are: Jjeongjjeongie Fan (95%), Joshushushu (93%), and Cuties Gathering (92%).Temperament: Persistence
It is a dimension to describe how someone continues their actions that were rewarded even if it isn’t any longer. People who have a high level of this trait tend to be ambitious and persistent. In SVT, Jeonghan was known to have the lowest level. The question addressed to this trait was “The mineral water you bought won’t open its cap no matter how hard you try. What will you do?” with option (1) related to it, “Try again because I believe in my own capability”. Result shows that there are four sub fandoms who chose it as their majority, namely Woozidan (57%), 8Star (56%), Boosadan (55%), and Huihui (55%). On the other side, there are six sub fandoms who chose majority towards option (2) “Ask for help from someone nearby” including Dinonara (60%) and Jjeongjjeongie Fan (59%) as the top two highest. An interesting result was achieved by Joshushushu, Wonwoorideul, and Dolly where they scored a perfect 50:50 between two options.Character: Self-Directedness
The ability to create an environment where one can achieve one’s goals and values. S.Coups and Dino were known to have the lowest level on this trait. The question addressed to this trait was “During group discussion, you have an idea about something unique. How will you express it?” with option (1) related to it, “Declare it right away”. Within this survey, there are six sub fandoms who chose option (1) as their majority. They are Dinonara (64%), Joshushushu (61%), Horangdan (58%), Dolly (58%), Couprang (57%), and Jjeongjjeongie Fan (55%). On the contrary, there are seven sub fandoms who chose option (2) “Wait for them to ask you” as the majority. The highest score in option (2) were achieved by Wonwoorideul at 66% and Woozidan at 63%.Character: Cooperativeness
Being cooperative or being one with society. SVT’s result shows that they are particularly scored high for this dimension. The case used was “A friend who lives a few blocks from you asks you to come over, but you don’t exactly know…” with option (2) related to it, “Visit them anyway”. The outcome is there are three sub fandoms who chose it as their majority, namely Boosadan (55%), Dinonara (52%), and Gyuldaengie (51%). On the other hand, Woozidan scores the highest (72%) in option (1) “Reject their request until they tell you…”Character: Self-Transcendence
Being one with the universe and nature. Joshua, Hoshi, Minghao, Dino, and Dokyeom were known to have a high level for this trait. The question addressed was “You are a small part of the greater whole Team SVT. What is your response likely to be?” it’s amazing that all of the sub fandoms chose option (1) as the majority which is “It amazes me so much that I am responsible to the whole community directly or not” with Boosadan and Dolly being the highest to score at 79%, followed by Joshushushu at 76%.

Bonus Questions

1. The question “Your group’s project is criticized by the supervisor. As a leader, what is your response likely to be?” was inspired by Hoshi’s individual analysis where he tends to blame the culprit when he feels that something wasn’t right through the process of achieving goals. All sub fandoms chose option (1) as the majority which stands for “Take the blame your group made and encourage others that it’s okay to fail”, being contrary to Hoshi’s description. The highest to score is Woozidan at 92% and the lowest is Horangdan at 64%.2. Last question of this survey, “Your best friend is hanging out with your other friend without you. How do you feel?” was inspired by Wonwoo’s individual analysis where he has difficulty in sharing or being possessive. Option (1) “Easy about it because who am I to complain?” being contrary to Wonwoo’s description was chosen by eight sub fandoms including Wonwoorideul along with Joshushushu and Horangdan at 59%, and Dinonara as the highest at 68%. On the other hand, there are four sub fandoms who chose option (2) as their majority, “Can’t help but be curious…” namely Woozidan at 53%, Couprang along with Jjeongjjeongie Fan at 55%, and Huihui at 61% which became the highest. Meanwhile Dolly scored a perfect 50:50 between two options.

Summary

To conclude the whole result, here’s how each sub fandoms are likely to act or feel:1. Couprang: have a high desire to live a meaningful life, tend to seek new challenges, uneasy with less-prepared activity, confident in achieving their goals within an environment, possessive.2. Jjeongjjeongie Fan: not as motivated as others in achieving something, tend to avoid wild and adventurous things, good at reading the room, can’t maintain long-term goals, sensitive to social cues, possessive.3. Joshushushu: tend to have tons of crazy ideas inside their head, good at reading the room, passionate, observant to others, sensitive to social cues, acknowledge their unity to the universe.4. Huihui: prefer details than whole, tend to lose themselves in daydreams, possessive, passionate, persistent, have a high desire to live a meaningful life.5. Horangdan: likely are attention-seeker, have a high desire to live a meaningful life, see good as good, easy in sharing, confident.6. Wonwoorideul: easy to sympathize, reluctant to open up, tend to be skeptical, uneasy with less-prepared activity, pretty much shy people, easy in sharing.7. Woozidan: hate being center of attention, cautious, strict in following rules, very passionate, reluctant to open up, pretty much shy people, tend to be skeptical, very selfless.8. 8Star: prefer details than whole, don’t hold grudges on other people, have a high desire to live a meaningful life, observant to others, tend to be a laid-back person, persistent.9. Gyuldaengie: very motivated to achieve success, very altruistic, very observant to others, see good as good, tend to enjoy status quo, cooperative.10. Cuties Gathering: have a huge sense of responsibility, strict in following rules, good at reading the room, have a high desire to live a meaningful life, uneasy with less-prepared activity, sensitive to social cues.11. Boosadan: tend to avoid wild and adventurous things, easy to sympathize, very responsible, tend to stay in reality more often, not so good at reading the room, tend to wonder how people will judge them, acknowledge their unity to the universe.12. Dolly: interested in wild and adventurous things, very responsible, cautious, very altruistic, passionate, have a high desire to live a meaningful life, able to maintain long-term goals, tend to be skeptical, acknowledge their unity to the universe.13. Dinonara: tend to ignore rules, tend to hold grudges on other people, not so good at reading the room, able to prioritize themselves rather than how people will judge them, feel empty and hurt inside when they get rejected, easy in sharing, tend to enjoy status quo.

I personally really enjoy making this mini research for my favorite people in the world which are Carats. I hope you can read it in enjoyment as well and I would like to point out again that this survey was made for fun, so please don’t take it way too seriously. SEVENTEEN has 13 members with diverse personalities, so does you who has your own uniqueness. This survey shows us that there are certain sub fandoms who possessed different personalities than their ult, possessed the same, and even possessed other’s ult personalities which are so interesting. Hence, it’s so amazing to think that members’ personalities and ours are there to complete each other, guide each other, and direct each other.
